We take pride in giving out this scholarship honoring the memory of our Dad. As a graduate of City High Middle School, he excelled in both STEM and the Arts. The Foundation will be awarding scholarships to help with the cost of post-secondary education.
A $500 scholarship will be awarded to one graduating high school senior pursuing studies in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts or Math).
This year’s scholarship is open to graduating seniors of City High Middle School in Grand Rapids Michigan, Dad’s alma mater.
Excerpts from one of Dad’s high school essays: “For many Americans, going to college is an expected, ordinary event. For me, however, it has been an ambitious, life-long dream. Born into poverty, it appeared that I was destined for a life of nothing more than manual labor. That likely would have been my fate if my family had not escaped from Vietnam to come to the United States. America opened up a whole world of opportunities for me. I came to believe that through hard work I could achieve anything, even my dream of a college education.
Like many Americans, I saw higher education as a means to success and of making life better for my children. As a result, I made every effort to prepare myself for college. It was for this purpose that I chose to attend City High-Middle School. Through City’s rigorous, college-oriented curriculum, I have developed the self-discipline and self-confidence to meet the challenge of college. I have also learned from City to strive not only for academic achievement, but also for excellence in all aspects of my life.”
